Last week, one of Linsly’s senior dormers, Evan Badhwar, travelled to Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston, Jamaica, as a part of the Cardiac Kids Foundation for the Chain of Hope Charity. At school, Evan participates in hockey, lacrosse, golf, The Linsly Line, and started the Breakfast Club.
The foundation helps families who do not have access to proper medical care and the finances to pay for surgery. Doctors from around the world volunteer to perform heart surgery on complex cases at understaffed hospitals. Their goal is to get more funding to be able to complete more missions like this across the world.
Evan found out about this effort because his dad is a member of the WVU team for the foundation. He volunteered in Jamaica by coordinating medical products, spending time with children, passing out toys, and scrubbing in to live heart surgeries to watch.
Evan expresses, “I wanted to do something to help others and give back to families with less medical access. When I got this opportunity to be a part of the foundation, I knew what my answer was going to be right away… yes!”
He says his favorite part about volunteering was spending time with the patients and families, and helping ease their stress before their surgical procedures.
Evan was there for three days volunteering, and other members of the team were there assisting in medical treatments for weeks. Amazing job, Evan!
