Thanksgiving Traditions!

As the holiday season comes around the corner and many start shopping, traveling, and planning, some Cadets share their favorite Thanksgiving traditions and foods. Enjoy these stories from three Linsly community members below.

To start, upper school social studies teacher, Mrs. Martin, recalls the traditions she’s been celebrating for many years. Her family always travels to her husband’s cabin to honor the holiday with many of her family. She says that her favorite food to have on Thanksgiving is cranberry salad. One tradition her family always does the day following Thanksgiving is making a soup using leftovers, including turkey bones and noodles.

Next, Mrs. Zatezalo, junior English teacher, describes some of the traditions that her family includes in their holiday celebrations. All of her family members travel to her house for dinner, and they also welcome dormers to celebrate with them. Each year, her mother and mother-in-law prepare specialties, including caramel nut bread pudding, sweet potato casserole, and cranberry salad that their family has been making for many years, in order to honor members of her family who have passed away. When her kids were younger, they would always make their grandpa unique hats that would make everyone smile. Now, they watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, look through magazines with Black Friday sales, enjoy breakfast, and have a conversation or play a game after dinner.

Mrs. Zatezalo shares that “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because people can focus on being together without all the pressures the holiday season normally brings.”

Lastly, junior class president, Sydney Burke, shares a few of her traditions. Like Mrs. Zatezalo, Sydney’s family watches the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade every year. A special tradition that she celebrates a few days before is going to the Wheeling Country Day School Thanksgiving lunch which is open to alumni to join. Another tradition that has been passed through generations is making a special salad dressing for dinner.
