A Caring Campus: Welcoming Back Football Player Debu Yi

In the closing seconds of the varsity football game last Friday at Harding Stadium in Steubenville, Linsly junior Debu Yi was blind-sided by a Steubenville player. Following this collision, Yi was knocked unconscious for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. After regaining consciousness, he was rushed to Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville. Luckily, he was able to come back home to his dorm at Weiss Hall later that night. His Linsly family had already gotten to work making sure Yi was stocked up on snacks and comfortably prepared for his recovery.

The cheerleaders came together and decorated Yi’s room and surprised him when he arrived back at the dorm.  They also put together a treat bag and all signed a card for him.  Teachers like Mrs. Wallace also wanted to help out.  She contacted his mother and got a list of all of Yi’s favorite snacks, which she then went and bought for him.  Dorm life results in very close bonds between boarders, so all of Yi’s roommates were jumping at the opportunity to make him feel at home.  Whenever they went out to the store, they made sure to think of him and bring him back cupcakes, Chick-fil-a, and other groceries.  It was amazing to see how much the community came together to care for Yi.  Students were overwhelming him with “get well” texts and messages.  Teachers and dorm parents were making his life as easy as possible so that he could relax and focus on recovering.  Even people from the Steubenville area made him a care package with a big blanket and many snacks.  Yi is still receiving an immense amount of support from his friends and family here in the Linsly community.

He plans on coming back to school in the coming weeks, but for now is still in the recovery process.  Everyone misses him and can’t wait to see him in the halls and around campus again!
