As West Virginia and Ohio County itself faced a surplus in Covid-19 cases throughout the holiday months, West Virginia high schools were forced to terminate their winter sports practices before any competitions began. During online learning, many cheerleaders, basketball players, hockey players, swimmers, wrestlers, and bowlers were wondering when their practices would resume and how the schedule would be adjusted.
Last year, the West Virginia winter sports season was carried out fully, but the spring season was compromised as Covid-19 hit the state and sent schools into closure. This year, with hope as a foundation, it seems as if winter sports will still occur but closer to the spring. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) recently posted an updated calendar for the winter and spring sports seasons, with February 15 marked as the first day of winter sports practices for both high school and middle school.
The following list is a condensed update from the WVSSAC:
- March 3: First middle school (MS) and high school (HS) girls basketball games
- March 5: First MS and HS boys basketball games
- March 15: First day of HS spring sports practices
- March 22: First day of MS spring sports practices
- April 10: MS wrestling ends, MS girls basketball ends
- April 12: First HS and MS spring sports contests
- April 17: MS boys basketball ends
- June 5: MS baseball and softball end
- June 9: MS track ends
The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) has also posted an updated calendar with most events for the spring season.
