This past Thursday, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra held their annual Symphony on Ice event. The local show is held at WesBanco Arena and includes professional as well as club skaters, with music played live by the Wheeling Symphony. Local high school choirs joined the symphony for many of the songs and local singer, Amanda McGovern, was featured in several others. Conductor, John Devlin, and the symphony started the show with “A Christmas Festival,” a medley of popular Christmas carols and closed the show with “Silent Night” an annual tradition.
Six Linsly students skated in this year’s performance including Sydney Burke, Aubrey Dunkin, Sophia Tsikouris, Anna Tsikouris, Danica Stoffer, and Londyn Mistovich. Linsly skaters from Wheeling Skate Club performed to songs including The Polar Express, Holiday Road, and Silent Night. These skaters practice from October until December to put together entertaining routines that engage the audience. Two nationally recognized skaters were also featured throughout the show. Ryan Dunk, a former US Junior Men’s National Champion, and Stephanie Roth, a collegiate and national champion, stunned the crowd with spectacular jumps and spins.
Many Linsly students also took time out of their evening to volunteer behind the scenes of the show. The students present were Analise Baker, Lili Blakely, Hunter Burkey, Claire Carson, Ava Crile, May Devine, Reese Maroney, Noelle Murray, Hadley Selick, Cecilia Sweeney, and Bridget Zimmerman. These students helped the show run by decorating, setting up tables, serving food, and cleaning up.
Going to Symphony on Ice is an amazing way to get into the holiday spirit, so make sure to mark your calendars for next December!
