This past Thursday, the “Booze and Cruise, You’ll Lose” program came to The Linsly School to present to the juniors and sophomores, many of whom are just getting their licenses or are new drivers on the roads. Representatives shared about the dangers of drinking and driving as well as the consequences. The group consisted of representatives from Gold, Khourey and Turak Law Firm, the Wheeling Nailers, WTOV9, and the West Virginia Police Department.
The program started with the students taking part in a Kahoot game where students answered questions and shared why they thought their answer was correct. Then, a representative would share why the answer is what it is and any additional information. Students who got the question correct won a free gift of a t-shirt, hat, or Nailer tickets! During the program, students were able and encouraged to ask questions and engage as much as possible.
After Kahoot, sophomore Chase Bacchus was called up to the stage to do a mock scenario of getting pulled over while driving under the influence. During the evaluation, the officer had Chase perform the tests normally, and then do the test again with glasses that simulate intoxication. Students were to evaluate the difference for themselves and understand how motor skills are affected by alcohol. After the program, students were able to stay, test the glasses, take photos, and ask any other follow-up questions.
This program was a great way to remind students to make good decisions while driving. Additionally, it taught students about laws, rules, and explained many common misconceptions about drinking and driving.
