This past weekend, the Linsly Hockey Team participated in the Bob Otten State Championships. The Cadets had a strong season prior, and had earned #1 seed for the tournament. Because of their rank, the team was automatically in the semi-finals and was set to play #5 Wheeling Park following their win against #4 Martinsburg. Linsly Hockey faced the Patriots twice prior to the tournament, pulling out both wins. At the semi-final game on Saturday, the Cadets pulled a lead early with a goal by senior and assistant captain Brenden Moore from fellow senior Mason Williams, drawing the first period to a close with the score of 1-0. The second period was not as dominating for the Cadets, as two goals scored by the Patriots had Linsly in a deficit. As the zamboni cut the ice in preparation for the soon to be hard-fought third period, the score stood 2-1. The Cadets’ determination stalled the Patriots, and a goal by sophomore Matthew Scouvart from junior Ethan Carlisle put Linsly back in the game. At the end of the third period, the score stood at 2-2, but overtime was to come. Following nearly 15 minutes of play, Wheeling Park found the back of the net to secure their spot in the finals. Senior goaltender Kaden Hiryok was deservedly named Linsly’s MVP of the game. However, the loss does not signal the end of the Cadets’s season, as Linsly has two more games: February 7 and February 18.
