The stress of preparing and applying to college can be overwhelming. In an attempt to help ease some of the stress, I interviewed two of Linsly’s alumni to see what advice they have for Juniors and Seniors who are starting to think about college.
Maddie Clelland and Mary Bedway are well adjusted to life away from home and spoke to me about their advice to help high school students not only transition to college but make the best of their high school experience.
They discussed with me what they wish they had payed attention to as well as what they did to help them during their time at Linsly.
- Pay attention to what Mrs. Zatezalo and Mrs. O are teaching you, those skills will not go away and they will help you tremendously in college classes.
- Practice good study habits in high school, because you will need them in college
- Get involved in extracurricular and academics, it will help prepare you for life in college.
- Make sure you explore your interests in senior research, instead of just choosing what is easy.
- Listen to the advice your teachers give you, they know what they are talking about.
- Do not cut corners or take the easy way out, you will regret it later in life.
- Lastly, Do not rush your senior year, appreciate the little and everyday things. You will regret taking them for granted.
While making the most of your current high school experience is important, Maddie and Mary also had advice for the future and the ways to easily adjust to the fast pace life of college.
- You get out what you put into college, so do not cut corners or take the easy way out. Try to make the most out of your experiences.
- Get to know professors and do not be nervous about going to office hours or asking for extra help
- Try to plan and stay on top of assignments. Procrastinating is easy, but can be extremely stressful.
- Make an effort to meet new people and explore new interests.
- It’s okay to not know what you want to do. Many students change their majors and interests, you will not be the only one.
In the end, the one thing that they both said was extremely influential in all aspects of life is to just have fun. Thinking about life outside of high school can be stressful, but remember not to take what you currently have for granted.
